Explaining the Things You Do, Admire, Believe, or Some Other Verb Now is your chance to explore some facet of your life’s experiences, a chance for reflection, to think about why you get out of bed on the same side every morning, why you believe or don’t believe in Santa Claus, why you think your best friend is the best friend a best friend could ever have, why you just can’t get enough hip hop crammed into one day, why you think water aerobics is the greatest sport, and so on and so forth. This is an assigned moment for you to set aside some time and simply think about some aspect of your life, then put it into words why this particular idea/object/person brings you so much joy or hurt or whatever. Convince me as to why you concluded that Halo is the greatest video game ever made. Make me believe in your opinion about why Ryan Gosling should star in every film, ever. Help me understand why you choose to wear your clothes inside-out. Show me why [insert superhero here] is your favorite superhero. Basically, inform me, in a logical manner, why you think/do/believe/etc. what you do. Draw on your life’s experiences. Pull from your knowledge about the Richter Scale. Share your passion for cooking Cajun dishes. Whatever you do, make me understand the why. Try crafting your essay using, no more than, THREE DISTINCT evidences to support your claim of “Why I…” (I.e. three different personal experiences that lead you to think/believe/see the way you do, three different sources of knowledge you’ve gained in the past. For example: Say you LOVE pizza because you love the ingredients (evidence one), pizza has family memories since you always had a Tuesday pizza night (evidence two), and you got engaged over your favorite pie (evidence three).) Even with three items, consider what you've read in "Breaking Free of the Five-Paragraph Structure." This needs to be a clean, fully-developed essay (a thesis—which will probably be your title, “Why I…,” supporting evidences, and a conclusion as to why you think you do/believe/see things the way you do).
