ESSAY ONE The Best Superhero When a person thinks of superheroes, they usually think of the major, more common ones, such as Super Man, Spiderman, or Batman. However, there is a vast amount more than the most common ones from the latest movies. When I think of superheroes, I go straight for X-Men, with my opinion of the best being Wolverine. Even though the X-Men have been a huge hit lately in the world of television and movies, many people still let them go unnoticed. He has abilities only unique to himself, has powers to make him a real superhero, and has a back-story unlike any other. These qualities are what make him the best superhero in my opinion. Wolverine is classified in the superhero world as a slasher, healer, and feral. A slasher is a hero that uses blades as weapons, a healer uses advanced healing genes to recover from injures, and a feral is part or full animal. Having these abilities together makes him unique and is a major reason why he is my favorite. Other heroes have powers or abilities like this, but not the three together. For example, the Hulk is a healer as well as a tank. Kendall Berry describes his healing powers by saying “…the Hulk has been pelted with millions of bullets and missiles that seem to have done little damage to the hero”. While Wolverine could not take missiles and many bullets, he can take large wounds and heal quickly from them. This makes him seem more like a “normal” human. Wolverine’s use of these abnormalities lets him smell out any enemy before they find him, slash them with his metal claws, and heal himself if the enemy happens to hurt him. As well, Wolverine actually has abilities that make him a superhero. He is not an heir to any company or has a vast amount of money like Batman or Iron-Man. In my opinion, a superhero has powers that make him or her “super”. While Batman and Iron-Man are great heroes, Wolverine uses his abilities, not money or machines, to defeat his enemies. While you could argue that these “super” heroes use other things than their money to help fight crime, it is the major factor to how they do it at the level they do. However, Nathan Rogers, a fan of the superhero Batman, argues this point: “Having no superpowers, Batman chose to hone his skills in science and criminology, eventually becoming the best example of a detective that the DC universe has to offer.” I can agree with Nathan’s point, however I do not see being a detective as a super power. Sherlock Homes was the greatest detective of all time, yet no one calls him a super hero. During Wolverine’s childhood, his mother banned him from coming home after killing his father. This compares greatly to other heroes childhood, as some of the greatest superheroes’ parents or families were nonexistent. However, none of those heroes lived and trained with wolves. Other than the full animal superheroes, I do not think any of the others could live with wild animals as many of them are too in their worldly ways. There are many other great superheroes other than Wolverine, such as the Hulk and Batman. I love the stories and adventures of each hero differently. Though, I believe that Wolverine is superior, because of his upbringing, abilities, and being an actual superhero. He may not be the most popular or anyone else’s favorite, but he is to me. ESSAY TWO The Urban Jungle Surviving in the urban jungle is tough. The streets are a hunting ground filled with many predators like jocks, psychos and punks. These predators search for weak and slow prey because they’re easier to catch. Emo hair and skinny jeans raises a huge flag easily seen by predators. The emo hair and skinny jeans wearer’s struggle for survival begins at home. The hair style impairs vision and takes bathroom time away from little sisters. The skin tight jeans restrict movement and don’t allow for the full range of motion needed for a man’s survival. Making sure the hair hangs at a perfect angle across the face covering one eye and getting just the right amount of spike in the back takes time. If a little sister is present in the house, then taking too much time in the bathroom may cause serious bodily harm. Little sister becomes angry and breaks down the door before her brother’s hair is finished. Anger turns to blind rage as she notices her brother is wearing her favorite jeans. Little sister picks up scissors from the counter and spears her brother in the arm. Wounded and shamed, her brother’s spirit is broken. This sends him into an unhealthy depression. He applies eyeliner to show his emotion. This also marks a sign of weakness easily spotted by predators. Covering one eye decreases field of vision and depth perception. Field of vision is important for detecting nearby enemies and predators such as jocks, psychos or punks. The psychos will spot their prey and begin to chase. Being chased through the concrete jungle is dangerous with impaired depth perception. A hole in the sidewalk thought to be only two feet in diameter is actually three feet. The leap for continued or uninjured life is misjudged, and escape is failed. The psychos have caught their prey. The skin tight jeans are equally detrimental to health and possible survival. The restriction tightness of the jeans disallows the rapid movement needed to escape from predators. The limited motion allowed by skinny jeans requires more power and energy to run faster. This causes rapid muscle fatigue and slows the wearer down. Running from the jocks is highly dangerous with little sister’s jeans. When faced with a wall, the skinny jeans wearer is already tired and cannot muscle the strength needed to get a good jump. He is also unable to get a good bend because his jeans are too tight. A feeble attempt is made and he catches the top of the wall with one arm. This arm happens to be the arm previously speared by scissors, and he cannot pull himself over fast enough. The jocks are in much better shape and easily catch up to their tired and injured prey. The next morning the young gentleman decides chop of his bangs and wears a pair of 501 jeans. Ready in seconds—and escaping the rage of his sister--he heads out to the streets once again. Comfortable and able to see, the previous emo hair wearer spots a group of Mohawks. His bruised and battered appearance catches the punks’ eyes’ and they begin to chase. Since he was able to spot the punks first he distanced himself quickly. The punks are slow and out of shape. Burdening themselves with heavy leather jackets and steel toe boots, the punks begin to slow down even more rapidly. With his new ability to see and move faster he easily escapes and lives the rest of the day without further pain.
