An Outbreak of the Irrational 1. What is Sarah Dzubay’s position on vaccines? How well does she argue her position? Sarah Dzubay agrees with the use of vaccines. She uses logical reasoning with a persuasive tone that allows readers of the opposite stance to consider her words. 2. One of the key features of an argument is that it gives careful consideration to other viewpoints. How does Dzubay acknowledge -- and refute-- other viewpoints? Dzubay discusses and refutes each reasoning behind the people who oppose vaccines. She first discusses the morality of vaccines by explaining the consequences if the individual does not take the vaccine. She explains that by not letting kids take the vaccines would be selfish, thus going against the morality of not taking the vaccines. She then explains the effectiveness of vaccines, and what the vaccines do. 3. What evidence does Dzubay provide to support her argument? Point to two pieces of evidence she uses. Do you find this evidence convincing? Why or why not? Dzubay uses trustworthy sources as well as past historical events. She quotes CDC and scientific journals. She discusses the outbreak of the measles and the importance of the outcome. I find the evidence very convincing since it reinforces my own stance. I already had some knowledge on the topic, but she provides additional sources. 4. What are your views on vaccines? Why do you hold these views? How would you respond to someone who holds opposing views? What kinds of evidence would you use to try to convince them? I am pro-vaccinations. I believe that vaccines help boost the immune system. If someone were to have different views on me, I would try to explain my own reasoning in hopes to make them reconsider their stance. I would use evidence similar to Dzubay such as the CDC´s research article, and I would also explain how the immune system has memory cells that attack those pathogens.
