ENGR1121 Z – Computing in Mechanical Engineering
Lab Making Logical Decisions (If-Then-Else) using Excel
Lab due: end of lab
Total points: 20
Labs are to be individual work. You may use the textbook, Excel’s help, and your notes. Lab work will be
graded during lab time and working results must be shown to the lab instructor by the end of the scheduled
lab time. All Excel Spreadsheets must be completed and submitted in accordance with the Computing
Assignment Format. Submit an electronic copy of your lab work to the appropriate Dropbox Folder in GSU’s
Folio by the end of lab. No hard copy needed unless specifically requested by the instructor.
Grading
Each problem will be graded according to: problem design (identifying inputs/givens, process, and outputs;
algorithm) and program style (headers and comments, variable names, proper formatted input and output
including units) 25%, and program correctness 75%. Lab problems not completed by the end of lab will receive
a grade of zero.
Lab Work
Create an Excel Spreadsheet to do each of the following problems.
Name the Excel Spreadsheet using the following naming scheme: lastnamelab3.xlsx
Create a new Worksheet within the Spreadsheet for each problem.
Name the Worksheet using the following naming scheme: Problem 1 and so on
1. (5 points) Calculate the variable mode which represents the mode of transport used to travel a certain
distance according to the following definition. You are given a variable called distance that represents the
distance to be covered in miles.
distance <= 2 miles: ‘Walk’
2 miles < distance <=10 miles: ‘Bicycle’
10 miles 30 miles: ‘Delta Airlines’
2. (5 points) Write an Excel code that will display a menu with the donut choices: glazed, cake, jelly, and
crème; and display the cost of the donut selected from the menu. The donut costs are: glazed $0.25, cake
$0.50, jelly $0.65, and crème $0.80. Hint: Create a variable choice (1,2,3 or 4) that depicts the type of
donut.
3. (5 points) Include in the above code the calculation of the total cost, given the number of donuts
purchased. If a dozen are purchased, a 5% discount is applied to the total cost. You may assume that all
purchased items are of the same kind.
4. (5 points) In an effort to downsize/restructure, an employer decides to lay-off or give raises to certain
employees based on their current salaries as shown in the following table.
Current salary in USD Severance pay in USD Lay off or % raise given
0 – 30,000
10,000
Laid off (new salary is set to 0)
30,000.01 – 60,000
0
2% raise
60,000.01 – 80,000
0
