Due date: TWO weeks from today’s class , ON PAPER.
The lock dissection lab
The purpose of this studio is working in teams to dissect a lock and determine how it
works.
Materials and Tools (which must all be returned in good working order at the end of the lab):
1. Lock and key
2. Screwdriver
Your team must the following:
- Study the whole device, examine interfaces with other objects, and determine function(s) (*).
- Take the lock apart, sketch it, determine how it operates, and the subsystems and their
(sub)function(s) and how they go in order for the subsystems to operate (*).
-
Organize the information in a table (see (1) below) that includes columns for:
Order number (1, 2, 3, etc.)
Names the components (find/INVENT suitable names)
Quantity of each component
Lists (briefly, in few keywords) the function of each component
HINTS: take apart the lock carefully, as there are many small parts and springs that may pop out.
Keep track of each part and sketch where it comes from.
- After taking apart the lock, (2 below) draw and label an assembly drawing of the whole lock
and each component,
and determine how they operate. (3 below) Draw a schematics of functions and subfunctions
(look at examples on back of page)
THEN Reassemble the lock so that it works.
Due at set date (see above) (group assignment, ALL NAMES): NO
technical report of your work, just include:
(1) table
(2) sketches of components (each, part numbers 1, 2, 3 , … must be used).) and of
**assembly** (An ASSEMBLY SKETCH, including numbers used in
table for each component)
(3) schematics of the functions (*), as described (see examples) in FOLIO
(today’s lecture)
