What is Critical Thinking My definition of critical thinking is to be able to receive information and then to “think” about it and weigh my options to determine my next move. I’m starting to realize that everything in life is not always true. For example, on Thanksgiving Day of 2018 I found out that I have a twin sister it has been a family secret for 34 years one of my dad’s friends bring it at Thanksgiving dinner not knowing that I didn’t know anything about this secret. I grew up believing I was the only child. I met my twin when I was a smaller child but when I asked why we looked so much a like I was told we were cousins and to leave it alone. I thought it was a coincidence that we had the same birthday. I never questioned anyone about it or gave it a second thought. So, I know all about thinking critically I have this situation that I must form an unbiased opinion on how I’m going to move forward with the information that I just received from my family. I’m at a loss for words and emotionally drained. Critical thinking is the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and action. (Michael Scriven & Richard Paul, 1987). Critical thinking allows us to think before making difficult decision to solve a complicated problem. Critical thinking and creative thinking are closely linked, but two different things. Creative thinking has more to do with brainstorming to help solve problems. Critical thinking gives us the ability to connect between logic and ideas. It is something that can also be improved over time. You would have to observe your experience to reflect on your reasoning. It also plays a big part in communication as well as in your everyday life. Critical thinking is that mode of thinking about any subject content, or problem in which the thinker improves the quality of his or her thinking by skillfully analyzing, assessing, and reconstructing it. “(Our Concept and Definition of Critical Thinking, 2015). Critical thinking is exactly what its name is thinking critically about a problem to come up with the best solution to solve the problem in the easiest and most efficient way possible. When critical thinking is utilized effectively, problem solving becomes more efficient and the problems you are working on taking less time to complete. Critical thinking is a vital skill to have when solving difficult problems not only in one’s issues at school or work, but also in the everyday commute with all the problems that arise. Problem solving is easier when we use our critical thinking skills effectively to find the right decision. Critical thinking is very important in everyone’s life and uses daily solve issues I have at work. Sumner’s definition of critical thinking is the examination and test of propositions of any kind which are offered for acceptance, in order is find out whether they correspond to reality or not. (William Graham Sumner, 1906).
