ACTIVE LEARNING TEMPLATE: Diagnostic Procedure Endoscopy PROCEDURE NAME ____________________________________________________________________ REVIEW MODULE CHAPTER ___________ Description of Procedure Endoscopy is the insertion of a long, thin tube directly into the body to observe an internal organ or tissue in detail. It can also be used to carry out other tasks including imaging and minor surgery. Endoscopes can be inserted into the openings of the body such as the mouth Indications Indications include: Dyspepsia, dysphagia or odynophagia, persistent GERD, occult GI bleed, and surveilance for malignancy. Interpretation of Findings Endoscopy allows HCP to visualize the GI tract and to, in some cases, take tissue samples for biopsy. This proceedure is used to evaluate various presentations in the upper and lower GI tract. Potential Complications Respiratory complications, accidental perforation, reaction to sedation, infection, bleeding CONSIDERATIONS Nursing Interventions (pre, intra, post) -Pre proceedure assessment; vital signs, airway and breathing. Medication history. Veriﬁcation of NPO status. -Ensure that patient has taken all laxatives or cleansing enemas -Maintenance of patent airway -Ensure that patient is regaining function post sedation Client Education -Educate the patient about the procedure and the signiﬁcance of any orders given. -Ensure that patient understands and is complient with NPO directive before procedure. Nursing Interventions -Ensure informed consent is signed -Relevent diagnostic studies; H&H, platelet count. -Time out should be veriﬁed -Ensure that dentures are removed -Ensure list of allergies and current medication
