Benchmark Exploring Reliability AND Validity Reliability is assessed using two types of measurements according to the Values and Motives Questionnaire (VMQ). One of the assessments related to the scores to the stability of the scale score over a period. The other assessment focuses on the homogeneity of the test. VMQ defines homogeneity as internal consistency or the state similarity of all that constitutes the items that form the scale score. Validity is measured in two different ways also. One way validity is measured is construct validity in which the consistency and extent of the test are assessed. This is done by comparing the scores of each test to the other and assessing the similarities. Another way validity is measured according to VMQ is criterion validity. Using criterion validity allows the examiner to compare, prove, and demonstrate how the test scores are similar. Validity and reliability ensure and determines if the psychometrics of a test are solid. What Makes a Good Test (n.d.) mentions that reliability measures a value, however, it does not guarantee the test’s information is valid. The validity on the other hand does measure the data or values to see if the test is valid. Reliability: Cronbach Alpha Coefficients. The Cronbach’s Alpha Internal consistency reliabilities were computed for both males and females combined. The chart shows that 8 of the 11 VMI scales exceeded 0.7 and according to What Makes a Test Good (n.d.) this is adequate. There were a few low scores on the scale that belonged to Achievement (.53) and Infrequency (.52). All of the VMI scales scored 0.82 and higher on the standard error of measurement (SEM). This means that the margin of error is slim. The Aesthetic has a very slim SEM of .82 and an Alpha score of.83 meaning that the margin of error is slim, and the measurement is accurate. However, there are some limited reliability scores when compared to the others which are adequate. Validity VMQ states that 159 psychologists and MBA students were used to completing the questionnaire. Between the VMI and OPP, there was a sample of 59 psychologist undergraduates who completed the questionnaire. There was a high correlation between the OPP and VMI which received accurate feedback on their test results (Values and Motives Questionnaire, n.d.). The remaining 100 test subjects were MBA students that were required to take the VWQ as an introductory course at London Business school. The population of the test subjects from the VMI, OPP, MAPP, and OPP is comparable to the age, and level of education. The population is composed of individuals who are obtaining some sort of degree. VMQ did have both males and females partake in the questionnaire. Unlike the other population, they did not disclose if both genders also took the survey. This can be a concern in the validity of the test due to differences incomparable test subjects. The Values and Motives Questionnaire et, (n.d.) mentions that the volunteers that took the test from the MAPP sample population were not dependable and could have had a significant impact on the validity. These are a few of the concerns behind the validity of the sample size and the nature of the population in the test’s feedback. VMQ Norming Population The population used to gather the feedback for this test were psychology and MBA students. Therefore, with this information, I do not believe it represents the general population. The population that was working on getting degrees was required to take this survey. This may compromise the validity of the test due to a conflict of interest. There was limited information on the number of males and females that participated in the survey. Without a fair sample number of genders taking the survey affects the validity of the comparison to the general population. Also, Ido not believe that the sample population used represents the general population. First, the sample population used had a college education, there was a lack of information about the age, background, culture, race, and language of the males and females that partook in the survey. Therefore, it is hard to use it as a fair comparison of the general population. Your Opinion of the VQM. The VMQ seems to have adequate reliability and validity overall. However, it lacked important information about the sample population. The VMQ reported having used both males and females to partake in the survey which adds to the reliability of the results. However, demographic information and more random selection of the sample population were needed. Most of the test subjects had higher education levels which do not quite represent the general population. Race, culture, language, and other demographic information are needed to make a more comparable sample population.
