Compare the functions of the three types of blood vessels in the circulatory system. Blood vessels flow blood throughout the body. Arteries transport blood away from the heart. Veins return blood back toward the heart. Capillaries surround body cells and tissues to deliver and absorb oxygen, nutrients, and other substances. 3. Describe the path of blood circulation through the body. Blood comes into the right atrium from the body, moves into the right ventricle and is pushed into the pulmonary arteries in the lungs. 4. What is the role of the nervous system in heartbeat regulation? The body regulated BP by neurotransmitters released by the sympathetic nervous system increasing the heart rate. 5. If you were standing, would you expect the blood pressure to be higher in your arm or in your leg? Explain your answer. The data show a marked increase in leg blood pressure assuming the standing position, with mean increases of 65 mm Hg in systolic and 62 mm Hg in diastolic blood pressure in the lower extremities, compared with the arm on standing.
