Forces of Motion Vocabulary Velocity - The speed and direction of an object’s motion. Force - A push or a pull that acts on an object. Power - The rate at which work is done. Equilibrium - A rate in which all the forces on an object balance each other. Inertia - The tendency of an object to resist any change in motion. Acceleration - The rate at which the velocity of an object changes. Machine - A device that changes the direction or the amount of force needed to do Work - The energy used when a force moves an object. Position - The exact location of an object. Direction - The line or course along which something moves. Speed - Measures how fast an object is moving in a given amount of time. Motion - The change in position of an object. Energy- The ability to do work. Newton’s 1st Law of Motion- An object at rest will stay at rest and an object in motion will stay in motion until a force acts upon it. Newton’s 2nd Law of Motion- The acceleration of an object depends on its mass and the force used to move it. Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion- For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
