Critical Thinking in the Nursing Process
1. Why did it become more difficult to control Mrs. Rainey’s intraocular pressure as her cataract
matured?
Mrs. Rainey’s intraocular pressure slowly built up because she got older. Most cataracts develop
in older adults, the proteins and fibers in the lens start to break down. Causing Mrs. Rainey’s
vison to become hazy or cloudy. Mrs. Rainey’s open-angle glaucoma did not cause her cataracts.
Although both Glaucoma and cataracts are cause by aging, glaucoma can exacerbate cataracts.
2. Identify medications that are commonly prescribed following cataract surgery. What are the risk
of interactions between there medications and Mrs. Rainey’s timolol drops?
Some medications that Mrs. Rainey could be prescribed after her cataract surgery are Betaxolol.
Another could be Carteolol for ocular lubricant. Latanoprost for her glaucoma. Gentamycin to
prevent Mrs. Rainey not get an infection in her eye after surgery. Mrs. Rainey’s timolol drops
could interfere with any beta blocker the doctor prescribes. She could develop bradycardia, a
change in intraocular pressure, headaches, dizziness or even feeling like she may pass out.
