# Production of Plane-Polarized Waves: P.P: Plane-Polarized EP: Electric Polarization 1. By Reflection from a medium (glass, water, oil etc.) Transparent Normal (⊥) Boundary plane R is out of page E-field is broken into horizontal and vertical components Plane of incidence It is the plane that contains the direction of the incident wave vector and the normal. Here plane of incidence → (y-z plane) → Parallel to plane of incidence → Perpendicular to plane of incidence Snell's law (parallel page) Reflected wave would be completely polarized if θi = θp = θB (Brewster's angle) Polarizing angle Op = θB = tan⁻¹(n₂/n₁) → Brewster's law. Wave is completely plane polarized along ⊥ to the plane of incidence. If angle b/w reflected wave & transmitted wave is 90°, then reflected wave is completely polarized along ⊥ to the plane of incidence. For example: UP wave incident on air-glass interface n₁ = 1 (air) n₂ = 1.5 (glass) θp = tan⁻¹(1.5/1) = 56.3° # It Glass-Air interface → θp = tan⁻¹(1/1.5) = 33.7° θp = 90 - 56.3 = 33.7° ② Plane - Polarization by Double refraction: When any unpolarized light wave is passed through a doubly refracting crystal like quartz, tourmaline, calcite etc., then the incident wave splits into two parts: E-wave o-wave o-wave → Ordinary wave e-wave → Extra ordinary wave ⇒ Doubly refracting crystals are anisotropic media.
