Andrea Borg Professor Ethics 9/30/2021 Journal I think Adam Smith was a very interesting philosopher who has a unique way of thinking just like the philosopher David Fume. Adam Smith declared that wealth is created through productive labor, and that self interest motivates people to put their resources to the best use. Personally, I agree with his way of thinking because not everyone that has an important job towards society does the job for their best interest but to have a source of income. Do I agree with Adam Smith that the way we practice business should be based on individual passion? I believe that the way we practice business should have passion to get the best results out of important things. For example, using the example of the butcher, he should have a passion for the meat to get the best quality meat for society but in reality his main purpose is to make money to buy things of his self-interest but in reality there are a lot of businesses who might not have the best interest of the type of quality they are actually selling but the passion they have of making money for themselves. Adam Smith said, “a butcher does not supply meat based on good-hearted intentions, but because he profits by selling meat”. The passion here is not on what his product is and what he is selling to the public but passion for his self interest to make money. Depending on what passion of business is meant in people’s perspective could be used to answer the question because for me the passion is something you love and take pride in, a butcher should have more pride in the quality of meat he is selling rather than him just making money for his self-interest. In the real world everyone wants to be rich and in some situations in order to become rich you have to be greedy and selfish, in the text it says “The rich consume little more than the poor, in spite of their natural selfishness”. Rich people could be selfish and as said earlier might not have the passion of what they are selling to the public but doing it for their own good and self interest.
