Diversity is a vital influence for the humanities in that it expands our emotional intelligence, critical thinking, communication skills, and cultural competence. We are an incredibly diverse and divided species. The humanities help close gaps by allowing us to view the world through the eyes of those different from us. We are shown other opinions, ideas, and varying perspectives, improving our abilities to empathize and understand others. Diversity has not always been a welcomed practice but as the years continue and as we are given more platforms of expression, compassion and connection are become all the more possible. The article, “Making home in exile: Everyday practices and belongings in Palestinian refugee camps” has a noteworthy excerpt that says, “How we move through and mark a space demonstrate our entanglements in histories and identities, our relative access and belonging to a place, a people, a time. We use space to commemorate, make political claims, and advertise for a future we hope for. We communicate our desires and our fears with slogans and barriers. We cultivate space to create community with neighbours, and to draw boundaries with outsiders” (Cory, 2020). To me, this exemplifies not only why we create but also how influential diverse works are by increasing our knowledge of the world around us and the distinct populations within it. Creative expression is a gateway for cultures to make themselves known and to earn and give respect. With platforms like Facebook and TikTok, it is easier than ever to connect with people from all around the world and see how they live, their traditions, their ethics, and virtues, therefore broadening our understanding of them and allowing us to generate compassion and empathy. Diversity has given creative expression more value and meaning as creative expression has the power to unite us as a species, regardless of our unlikeness.
