Our planet's oceans, which cover more than 70% of the Earth's surface, serve as a crucial life support system, yet they have increasingly become repositories for discarded plastic waste. To begin, plastics follow a unique degradation path; they undergo photodegradation, fragmenting into ever smaller pieces when exposed to sunlight. These minute plastic particles, known as microplastics, are unwittingly consumed by a spectrum of marine organisms, from minuscule plankton to massive whales. This ingestion can lead to physical harm, blockages, and malnutrition, ultimately disrupting the entire marine food chain. Furthermore, plastic waste poses a significant entanglement hazard for marine creatures. Sea turtles, dolphins, seals, and other species frequently find themselves ensnared in abandoned fishing nets and plastic debris, resulting in injuries and fatalities. Another distressing aspect is that plastics serve as magnets for harmful chemicals. Persistent organic pollutants have a propensity to accumulate on the surfaces of plastic waste. When marine life ingests these plastics, they inadvertently introduce toxins into the food chain, potentially impacting humans who consume seafood.
