It involves a series of chemical reactions that take place in the mitochondria of cells. The process begins with glycolysis, which breaks down glucose into pyruvate. Pyruvate is then converted into acetyl-CoA, which enters the Krebs cycle. The Krebs cycle produces ATP, NADH, and FADH2. NADH and FADH2 carry electrons to the electron transport chain, where they are used to generate ATP. The final electron acceptor in the electron transport chain is oxygen. The process of cellular respiration produces a total of 36 ATP molecules per glucose molecule.
