Chattel Slaves - Chattel slaves are bought, sold and forced to work without pay. The Research - In 2020, Dr Rosana Garciandia and Professor Philippa Webb, from The Dickson Poon School of Law, and Dr Maeve Ryan, from the Department of War Studies, published preliminary research looking at the experience of Mauritania. - In 1980, Mauritania became the last state in the world to formally abolish chattel slavery. - Yet, despite a range of measures, Mauritania faces significant challenges in the enforcement of its anti-slavery legislation. - Dr Rosana Garciandia, Dr Maeve Ryan and Professor Philippa Webb: • Slavery remains deeply ingrained in some societies. Patriarchal Order - Due to the patriarchal order of Mauritanian society and the biological reproductive and nursing capacities of women, as well as their close ties to their children... - ...it is particularly difficult for women to escape the legacies of slavery and transcend their enslaved status and identity. - Victims of slavery and their descendants suffer discrimination and inequality, and remain locked into relationships of dependency on their former slaveholders, due to cultural traditions, a lack of skills and the dearth of alternative economic opportunities.
