ONLINE CLASSES The Internet makes it easy to send video and other multimedia content anywhere in the world. Because of this, it is possible to deliver educational content such as classroom broadcasts or complete online courses. Some of these classes are designed to supplement classroom education. For example, if a professor wants students to hear a specific lecture from a professor at another school, videoconferencing equipment can be set up to watch the lesson live in the classroom. Other classes are completely available online, allowing students to be anywhere in the world while they learn. While this may seem desirable, online classes generally require students to be self-motivated and not fall victim to the distractions at the location where they log into the course. Some universities even offer entire accredited degree programs online. Students learn via online lecture notes or presentations using a learning management system (LMS) such as Blackboard Learn, Canvas, and Moodle. They use this system to complete exams, turn in work, and communicate with their instructor and classmates. Some traditional universities offer degrees that use a combination of face-to-face and online classes, while others offer their services exclusively over the Internet. Universities are also experimenting with blending classroom and online components, where you meet with your class in person on one day, but meet online the next. Students who simply want to learn and do not require course credit can now enroll in a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC). These are huge online courses offered for free by a variety of universities, including prestigious ones such as Princeton, Harvard, and MIT. Their aim is to offer high-quality content to millions of individuals throughout the world who do not have the opportunity to attend select classes at these universities. If you enroll in one of these classes, you might discover that f thousands of students are registered along with you. ONLINE GAMES The Internet offers more than the games you download to your mobile device or play on websites. For many years, it has been possible to connect gaming consoles such as PlayStation and Xbox to the Internet in order to play with (or against) other players. For PCs, a category of games known as MMORPGs (massively multiplayer online role-playing games) has experienced rapid growth. In these games, millions of players connect to various servers to team up with other players in very large virtual worlds. While some games can be played using a web browser, most require the purchase and installation of software.
