ORGANIZATION AND AFFINITIES Hedymania and Amphioxus M.Sc. First Year – Zoology Study Notes 1. HEDYMANIA (TUNICATA / UROCHORDATA) Systematic position Kingdom Animalia Phylum Chordata Subphylum Urochordata (Tunicata) Class Ascidiacea Representative form Hedymania (a solitary ascidian) General organization • Habit and habitat: Adult Hedymania is a sessile marine animal, generally attached to a hard substratum. The body is enclosed in a tough, non-living tunic or test. • Body form: The adult is sac-like or roughly cylindrical. The free end bears two siphons: an incurrent branchial siphon and an excurrent atrial siphon. • Tunic: The test is secreted by the epidermis and contains tunicin, a cellulose-like substance. Blood vessels may extend into the test. • Body wall: The epidermis encloses the musculature and connective tissues. Circular and longitudinal muscle fibres help control the siphons. • Pharynx: The pharynx is greatly enlarged and perforated by numerous stigmata. It functions in both feeding and respiration. • Endostyle: A ventral endostyle produces mucus. Food particles become trapped in mucus and are carried toward the oesophagus by ciliary action. • Digestive tract: The oesophagus leads to a stomach and intestine; the anus opens into the atrial cavity. • Circulation: The heart is tubular and shows periodic reversal of the direction of blood flow, a characteristic feature of tunicates. • Nervous system: The adult nervous system is reduced to a small cerebral ganglion situated between the two siphons. • Reproduction: Hedymania is generally hermaphroditic. Gonads are associated with the visceral mass, and fertilization is commonly external or occurs in the atrial region depending on the species. Chordate characters in Hedymania • Notochord: Present prominently in the larval tail, but absent in the adult. • Dorsal hollow nerve cord: Present in the larva; greatly reduced in the adult. • Pharyngeal gill slits: Numerous and retained in the adult, forming a large branchial basket. • Endostyle: Present and homologous with the thyroid gland of vertebrates. • Post-anal tail: Well developed in the tadpole larva but lost during metamorphosis. Affinities of Hedymania With Chordata: The tadpole larva possesses the fundamental chordate features—notochord, dorsal hollow nerve cord, pharyngeal slits, endostyle and post-anal tail. These features establish its chordate relationship. With Vertebrata: The endostyle is comparable to the vertebrate thyroid, while the larval neural tube and notochord show basic chordate organization. However, the adult lacks a vertebral column and has a highly specialized sessile organization. With Echinodermata: Similarities are mainly embryological, including deuterostome development. These similarities support a common evolutionary relationship rather than close structural similarity in adults. Important conclusion: The striking difference between the free-swimming tadpole and sessile adult illustrates retrogressive metamorphosis. The larva retains more obvious chordate characters than the adult. 2. AMPHIOXUS (BRANCHIOSTOMA) Systematic position Kingdom Animalia Phylum Chordata Subphylum Cephalochordata Representative form Amphioxus / Branchiostoma General organization • Habit and habitat: Amphioxus is a small, marine, fish-like cephalochordate. It usually lives partly buried in sandy or shallow coastal sediments. • Body: The body is laterally compressed, translucent and pointed at both ends. The head is poorly differentiated and there are no paired appendages. • Myotomes: The trunk contains numerous V-shaped muscle blocks or myotomes. Their arrangement permits efficient lateral swimming movements. • Notochord: It extends from the anterior to the posterior end and persists throughout life. It forms the main axial supporting structure. • Nerve cord: A dorsal hollow nerve cord lies above the notochord and extends almost the full length of the body. • Pharynx: The pharynx is large and contains numerous gill slits. Food is filtered from the water, while water passes through the gill slits into the atrium. • Endostyle: Located on the floor of the pharynx; it secretes mucus that traps food particles. • Atrium and atriopore: The pharyngeal region is surrounded by an atrium. Water leaves the atrium through the atriopore. • Digestive system: The mouth leads into the pharynx, followed by intestine and anus. A hepatic caecum is present. • Circulation: The circulatory system is closed and well developed, but a true heart is absent. Blood is propelled by contractile vessels. • Excretion: Excretion occurs mainly through numerous protonephridia associated with the pharyngeal region. • Reproduction: Sexes are separate. Numerous gonads occur in the trunk region, and fertilization is generally external. Chordate organization of Amphioxus • Notochord: Present throughout life and extends into the anterior region. • Dorsal hollow nerve cord: Persistent and situated dorsal to the notochord. • Pharyngeal gill slits: Numerous and function in filter feeding and respiration. • Endostyle: Present on the floor of the pharynx and comparable with the vertebrate thyroid. • Post-anal tail: Present throughout life. • Segmental musculature: Myotomes provide evidence of the primitive chordate body plan. Affinities of Amphioxus With Urochordata: Amphioxus and tunicates share chordate features such as a notochord, dorsal nerve cord, pharyngeal slits and endostyle. In Amphioxus these characters are retained throughout life, whereas in adult tunicates several are lost. With Vertebrata: Amphioxus resembles vertebrates in its persistent dorsal nerve cord, notochord, segmented trunk musculature, pharyngeal apparatus and endostyle. However, it lacks vertebrae, paired fins, a true heart and a well-developed cranium. Primitive chordate features: The simple organization, persistent notochord, numerous pharyngeal slits, absence of a true brain and absence of paired appendages make Amphioxus an important model for understanding the basic chordate plan. 3.
