Lecture Notes on Leadership in Literature - INT D 135 Leadership is an ever-present factor in literature; the characters that follow the concepts of leadership possess courage, knowledge, and charisma. - Thus, these characters may be viewed as positive and negative examples; the readers will gain a better understanding of what being a leader entails. Qualities of a Leader - In literature, leaders often exhibit a range of qualities that set them apart from other characters: ● ★ Vision ★: Great leaders have a clear vision of what they want to achieve ● Courage: are willing to take risks and face challenges head-on. ● Wisdom: Leaders possess the knowledge and experience to make informed decisions ● Empathy: Understanding and caring for others is a key trait. ● Resilience: ability to recover from setbacks and persevere. Iconic Leaders in Literature: Several characters in literature have become iconic for their leadership qualities: - Atticus Finch (To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee): A lawyer who stands for justice and moral integrity. - Odysseus (The Odyssey by Homer): Known for his cunning and strategic mind, Odysseus is a leader who overcomes immense challenges. - King Arthur (Various Arthurian Legends): The legendary king who united Britain and established the Knights of the Round Table. - (Fiction) Katniss Everdeen (The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins): A symbol of rebellion and strength, she leads a revolution against a tyrannical regime. - Jean Valjean (Les Misérables by Victor Hugo): A former convict who transforms his life and becomes a leader through his acts of kindness and bravery. Leadership Styles: explores different styles of leadership, providing insights into how leaders can vary in their approaches: Authoritarian: Bosses who make decisions on their own and, with full authority, will be obeyed. Democratic: Individuals in management positions who seek input from other people in decision-making procedures. Transformational: Successful managers or those who lead people to get the best out of them. Servant Leadership: Directors who ensure that people are well cared for and compete in the best way possible.
