CONSERVATION OF
MOMENTUM AND ENERGY
1. Two objects, A and B, have masses of 2 kg and 3 kg, respectively. Object A
moves to the right at 5 m/s, while object B moves to the left at 2 m/s. If the
two objects collide elastically, what are the final velocities of each object?
Using the conservation of momentum and kinetic energy, the final velocity
of A is 1 m/s to the left, and the final velocity of B is 6 m/s to the right.
2. A bullet with a mass of 0.01 kg is fired at a speed of 300 m/s into a wooden
block with a mass of 2 kg that is initially at rest. The bullet becomes
embedded in the wooden block. What is the speed of the block after the
bullet is embedded?
Using the conservation of momentum
3. A 4 kg cart moving at 10 m/s collides with a stationary 6 kg cart. If the
collision is perfectly inelastic, what is the final velocity of the combined
carts?
Using the conservation of momentum: 4. Two ice skaters, one with a mass of 50 kg and the other with a mass of 70
kg, push off from each other. If the 50 kg skater moves at 3 m/s, what is the
velocity of the 70 kg skater?
Using the conservation of momentum:
5. A pendulum bob with a mass of 1 kg is released from a height of 0.5 m.
What is its speed at the lowest point of its swing?
Using the conservation of energy:
6. A 1500 kg car moving at 20 m/s collides with a 1000 kg car moving at 10 m/s
in the same direction. If they stick together after the collision, what is their
final velocity?
7. A 0.2 kg ball moving at 8 m/s collides elastically with a 0.3 kg ball at rest.
What are their velocities after the collision?
Using the conservation of momentum and kinetic energy: 8. A 0.5 kg ball drops from a height of 10 m. What is its speed just before
hitting the ground?
9. A rocket expels gas at a rate of 0.1 kg/s with a velocity of 500 m/s relative to
the rocket. If the mass of the rocket is 50 kg, what is the thrust generated
by the rocket?
10. A block slides down a frictionless incline of height 4 m. What is its speed at
the bottom?
