An electric field is a vector field that represents the force per unit charge exerted on a positive test charge at any point in space. It is created by electric charges and can be described mathematically by the equation 𝐸 = 𝐹𝑞, where 𝐸 is the electric field, 𝐹 is the force experienced by the test charge, and 𝑞 is the magnitude of the test charge. 2. How do you calculate the electric field at a point due to a point charge? The electric field 𝐸 at a distance 𝑟 from a point charge 𝑄 is given by Coulomb's law: where 𝜖0 is the permittivity of free space, and 𝑟 is a unit vector pointing from the charge 𝑄 to the point where the field is being calculated. 3. What is the difference between electric field and electric potential? The electric field is a measure of the force experienced by a unit positive charge at a point in space, while electric potential (also known as voltage) is a scalar quantity that represents the potential energy per unit charge at a point in space. The electric field is the gradient of the electric potential, meaning it points in the direction of the greatest rate of decrease of the potential 4. How does electric potential change along an electric field line? Electric potential decreases in the direction of the electric field. If you move along an electric field line from one point to another, the electric potential at the new point will be lower if you are moving in the direction of the field, and higher if you are moving against the direction of the field. 5. How do you determine the electric potential energy of a charge in an electric field? The electric potential energy 𝑈 of a charge 𝑞 in an electric field with electric potential 𝑉 is given by : This formula indicates that the potential energy is the product of the charge and the electric potential at the point where the charge is located. 6. What is the relationship between the work done by an electric field and the change in electric potential energy? The work 𝑊 done by an electric field in moving a charge 𝑞 from one point to another is equal to the negative change in electric potential energy Δ𝑈 of the charge. Gauss's law states that the total electric flux Φ𝐸 through a closed surface is equal to the net charge 𝑄enc enclosed by the surface divided by the permittivity of free space 𝜖0 : This law is particularly useful for calculating the electric field in cases with high symmetry (such as spherical, cylindrical, or planar symmetry). By choosing an appropriate Gaussian surface, you can simplify the calculation of the electric field. 8. How does the distribution of charge on a conductor's surface affect the electric field around it? In electrostatic equilibrium, excess charges on a conductor reside on its surface and distribute themselves in such a way that the electric field inside the conductor is zero. The surface charge density can vary, being higher at points or edges with smaller radii of curvature. How are the concepts of capacitors and capacitance related to electric fields and potentials? A capacitor consists of two conductors separated by an insulator (dielectric). It stores electrical energy by maintaining an electric field between the conductors. The capacitance 𝐶 of a capacitor is defined as the ratio of the charge 𝑄 on one conductor to the potential difference 𝑉 between the conductors: Capacitance depends on the geometry of the conductors and the properties of the dielectric material. The electric field between the conductors is directly related to the potential difference and the separation between the conductors. 10. How is the principle of superposition applied in calculating the total electric field produced by multiple charges? The principle of superposition states that the total electric field 𝐸total at any point due to multiple charges is the vector sum of the electric fields produced by each charge individually.
