Acne neonatorum: clogged hair follicles or pores in the skin present at birth Acrocyanosis: A blue or purplish discoloration of the hands and feet of the newborn. Apnea: A cessation of breathing. Caput succedaneum: A swelling of the scalp of the newborn caused by pressure from the uterus or vaginal wall during delivery. Cephalohematoma: A swelling on the head that does not cross the suture line. It is caused by birth trauma that causes a rupture of blood vessels between the skull and periosteum. Circumcision: The surgical removal of the end of the foreskin of the penis. Dermal melanosis: aka Mongolian Spot; congenital birthmark caused by melanocytes tapped deep in the skin appears flat and bluish-gray or brown, and is located on the back or buttocks Erythema toxicum neonatorum: Also known as a newborn rash, this rash may appear as macules, papules, or vesicles and may appear on any part of the body except the palms and soles of the feet. Fontanel: Often referred to as the “soft spot” on the baby’s head, this fibrous membrane lies between the bones of the cranium. Gynecomastia: enlarged breasts in the newborn caused by maternal hormones Hemangioma: aka nevus vascularis; this growth consists of newly formed and dilated capillaries in the dermal and subdermal layers of the skin Lanugo: A fine hair that covers the forehead, ears, and body of the newborn. Melanocytotic nevi: aka moles; a nevus may be raised or flat. The congenital melanocytic nevus is usually evenly pigmented and brown or black in color Milia: sebaceous glands occluded with keratin that appear as tiny white papules about 1 mm in size located on the nose, chin, cheek, and forehead. Nevus flammeus: aka port wine stain; this reddish-purple skin deformity is made up of dilated skin capillaries Nevus simplex: aka stork bite, angel kiss, or salmon patch; this type of benign birthmark is a capillary malformation that fades over time Preterm: An infant born before 37 weeks’ gestation. Post-term: An infant born after 42 weeks’ gestation. Pseudomenstruation: A mucus- and blood-tinged vaginal discharge that may be present in the newborn female for a few days until the maternal hormone level decreases. Retractions: A pulling in of the skin around the ribs and sternum when inhaling that is observed during respiratory distress.
