Word Definitions: Cell Theory: In biology, all living things consist of cells, each of which has come from pre-existing cells. Reasoning, logic & evidence: Really important. Used to figure out how things work. Two Types of Science: Induction-Based (Also known as Discovery Science) Heavily relies on observations Predictive generalizations CELL THEORY: Cell theory came about when multiple different scientists at different times and locations made the same observations, indicative reasoning. Hypothesis-Based: A tentative explanation for an observation, an educated guess, conjecture. Deduction (Deductive Reasoning): Reasoning from general statements; must be true, Necessary Inference. Hypothesis-Deductive: Hypothesis testing; outcome of the experiments is based on the hypothesis. If the experiment is NOT consistent with predictions, then the hypothesis is rejected. If the experiment is consistent with predictions, then the hypothesis is supported (Supported Proof). Testable Hypothesis: Provides testable predictions for outcomes of experiments Potential to be shown incorrect. This is the criterion of falsifiability. Non-Testable Hypothesis: Cannot provide testable predictions Cannot be shown incorrect Science is good at disproving things.
