ACTIVE LEARNING TEMPLATE: Therapeutic Procedure HEMO A1C VS FASTING GLUCOSE CHECK PROCEDURE NAME ____________________________________________________________________ REVIEW MODULE CHAPTER ___________ Description of Procedure A1C- blood test that measures your average glucose over the past 2/3 months. Fasting Blood Glucose-blood test that measures glucose after an overnight fast. Indications A1C A range of 5.7-6.4 percent indicates an increased risk for development of diabetes (i.e., prediabetes), and lifestyle interventions may be beneficial. 6.5+ percent is considered diabetic. FBS An FBS greater than 126 mg/dL on more than one occasion usually indicates diabetes. /Evaluation A1C -below 5.7%=normal, 5.7-6.4%=prediabetes, 6.5%+=diabetes. Fasting 99 mg/dL or lower= normal, 100 to 125 mg/dL =prediabetes, 126 mg/dL or higher indicates you have diabetes. Potential -pregnancy or an uncommon form of hemoglobin can make the A1C test inaccurate. CONSIDERATIONS Nursing Interventions (pre, intra, post) PRE- Make sure pt has fasted overnight or at least 8 hrs (FBS test only) INTRA- give pt a sugary solution POST- check pt's glucose every 2 hours, and assess puncture site. Client Education Educate client to assess puncture site to be aware of any signs of infection. Nursing Interventions Assess client to make sure bleeding has stopped; not for any sign of bruising, swelling, or infection.
