Medication Name (Brand AND Generic): Aspirin, Acetylsalicylic Acid (ASA) – (Brand Name: Ecotrin, Bayer Aspirin, Chewable Aspirin, Empirin Therapeutic Uses: - Reduce inflammation and fever Anticoagulant Produce analgesia Decrease incidence of TIA and MI Adverse Effects: - Increase GI effects, bleeding Renal Impairment Hemorrhage associated with Reye’s syndrome Nursing Interventions: - Contraindications: - Hypersensitivity Use cautiously with impaired renal functions, chickenpox, influenza (increase risk of reye’s syndrome) - Patient Education: - Medication/Food Interactions: - Increase risk of bleeding with warfarin, heparin Glucocorticoids, ibuprofen, and alchol ACE inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers(ARBs) Medication Administration Route: - Usually administered by PO, suppositories are also available Give drug with food or after meals, if GI upsets occurs Do not give aspirin with strong vinegar like odor Do not crush to ensure patient does not chew sustained release product Patient might have dizziness/drowsiness, check patient regularly - Instruct patient to take salicylates with full glass of water and remain upright for at least 15-30 mins after administration Advise patient to report any tinnitus, bleeding, bruising Avoid using alchol with medication Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness: - Relief of discomfort reduction of fever prevention of TIA and MI
