Writing Your Conclusion Directions: Your conclusion segment should restate your hypothesis; then tell whether the hypothesis should be accepted or rejected and why. The second paragraph is where you discuss your observations. Tell anything you think may have affected your results and anything you would change if you redid the experiment. You may discuss any procedures that you felt worked well. End with a spin-off idea for a new experiment. 1. State what your hypothesis was. In the next sentence tell whether your hypothesis should be accepted or rejected, using the results of your experiment to back that up. 2. Skip a line. 3. Write a paragraph of your observations (see suggestions above). End with an idea for a spin-off experiment. Example: (Underlined words may be used as sentence starters.) My hypothesis was that the building with the base isolator would best withstand an earthquake. The results indicate that this hypothesis should be rejected because the buildings with the cross-bracing stood longer. At times, I had to repeat parts of my experiment because the joints slipped before I applied the shaking movement. If I were to redo the experiment, I would use something other than the clay to connect the joints in the buildings because the clay got softer after it had been worked with for a while. I did think my method of shaking the buildings worked well. Since I used the same setting on the neck massager and hooked it up under the buildings exactly the same way each time, I could depend on that being a constant. I used the same shape buildings for this experiment, but I wonder if the shape of a building would affect how well it withstood earthquakes. That would be a neat idea for another experiment.
