Self-Reflection Memo Purpose: This activity will consist of a critical application of a selected personality theory, of your choosing, towards personal experience. The objective of this assignment is to demonstrate mastery of the material and extend your capacity for critical analysis. Related Course Objectives: • Identify relevant knowledge necessary to conceptualize personality development. • Formulate conclusions that are logically tied and based on personality theory. • Apply personality theory to the conceptualization of a personal experience. Relevance: The focus of this course has been on understanding the various theoretical perspectives that have emerged in the field of personality psychology. Although understanding theory is important, being able to apply theoretical frameworks to specific individuals is a necessary skill within the field of psychology, particularly clinical psychology. Over and above this direct relevancy, the capacity to critically evaluate and apply the material to a hypothetical situation will build your critical thinking skills, which is not only essential for your chosen careers but for being an informed consumer and global citizen. Description: You will write one short essay (1.5 - 2 pages) in which you apply the principles of a personality theory discussed in class to explain something about yourself: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. How you feel in certain situations, Choices you made or did not make, How you think in certain situations, How you acquired certain attitudes or beliefs, Why you do what you do in certain situations, Why you feel, think, and do what you do in certain situations. Directions: A good essay will first describe the behavior/emotions in question, and second, discuss why you feel/think/behaved this way from the perspective of a particular personality theorist or theory. The latter (and most important part) will necessitate your identifying the theory you will use and identifying the concepts you are using as you go. Emotionally or cognitively complex behavior will probably work best for these papers -- routine behavior (such as getting dressed in the morning) will not lend itself to "analysis." The selected personality theory is poorly/ inaccurately described. Application of Theory There is no application of personality theory towards behavior/ emotions. There is minimal application of personality theory towards behavior/emoti ons. Organization The essay lacks structure and organization, which makes it difficult to navigate. There are a significant amount of grammar and spelling errors, which makes it difficult to read. The essay has some structure, but at times is hard to follow or not well organized. There are a moderate amount of grammar and spelling errors. Provides a comprehensive overview of the selected personality theory but does not cover all relevant aspects of each theory necessary to describe behaviors/ emotions. There is application of personality theory towards behavior/emotions, however, there are missed opportunities or conceptual ambiguities. The essay has good structure but lacks unity due to occasionally straying from topic.
