Indications Indications for a colostomy are colorectal cancer, inﬂammatory bowel disease, perforation of the colon, or fecal incontinence, bowel obstruction. Colostomy care is usually provided once the appliance is full or after 3-5 days. Outcomes/Evaluation Pink, red, moist. Changes in size for 4-6 weeks after surgery. Listen to bowel sounds and assess any stool. The patient will adjust to a life with a colostomy, enjoying activities that they did before, without the symptoms that made it necessary. Potential Complications Parastomal hernia, stoma trauma, mucocutaneous separation, stoma necrosis,stoma prolapse, stoma retraction, stoma retraction, CONSIDERATIONS Nursing Interventions (pre, intra, post) Assess condition of peristomal skin and stoma during appliance change. Listen to bowel sounds and assess any stool. Client Education This proceedure is done under general anesthetic. There will be two openeings although you may only be able to see one. One opening releases waste products and the other only a small amount of mucous. Nursing Interventions Ask patient if they feel any discomfort around stoma site. Ask and allow time for questions and answers
