The Human Digestive
The human digestive system functions to digest and absorb
nutrients from the food consumed. The process begins in the
mouth, food is chewed and mixed with saliva. After
swallowing, food enters the esophagus to the stomach where it
is digested mechanically and chemically by stomach acid.
Then the food flows into the small intestine, namely the
duodenum, jejunum and ileum, where most of the nutrients are
absorbed. Leftover food enters the large intestine or colon,
water and minerals are absorbed, then ends up in the rectum
as feces or faeces before being excreted through the anus.
Other important organs are the liver, pancreas and salivary
glands which produce digestive juices. Blood cells, smooth
muscles and nerves coordinate the digestive system. In this
way, the digestive system ensures that nutrients from food
can be absorbed and utilized by the body.
To maintain the health of the digestive system, we are
advised to eat balanced nutritious foods rich in fiber from
fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Drinking enough water
every day is also important to clean up leftovers. In
addition, avoid excessively spicy and fatty foods that can
trigger digestive problems.
Regular exercise, regular bowel movements, and chewing food
slowly also help the digestive system work smoothly. Reducing
stress with meditation and getting enough rest is also
necessary so that the digestive system is not disturbed by
stress and fatigue. If symptoms such as stomach ache or bowel
problems appear, consult a doctor immediately. By adopting a
healthy lifestyle, the digestive system will remain fit and
function optimally.
