A legal document that expresses the client's wishes regarding medical treatment in the event the client becomes incapacitated and is facing end-of-life issues The purpose of an advanced directive is to communicate a client's wishes regarding end-of-life care should the client become unable to do so A document in which a client designates a health care proxy to make health care decisions for them if they are unable to do so The provider must consult with the client and/or family before prescribing DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) or AND (Allow Natural Death) Most states have laws that protect healthcare providers from liability for following the directions of a living will Staff should give clients that do not have an advanced directive information on their rights related to health care decisions and how to formulate an advanced directive.
