KMTG and Real Gases – Solutions
1. Freon-12 is CF2Cl2 (molar mass = 119.0 g/mol).
2. P1(ideal) = 123.1 atm; P1(real) = 60.6 atm
P2(ideal) = 0.246 atm; P2(real) = 0.246 atm
Sample 2 behaves more ideally (low pressure).
3. Note that these answers use d = 50 pm (1 pm = 10-12 m).
At P = 3.0 atm, Zab = 1.0×109 collisions/s, λ = 1.3×10-6 m.
At P = 3.0×10-6 atm, Zab = 1000 collisions/s, λ = 1.2 m.
The results are consistent with expectations, because at lower pressure there are fewer
particles per unit volume, hence fewer collisions and longer distances traveled between
collisions.
