Shelford's Law of Tolerance Shelford's Law of Tolerance is an ecological principle that states that the existence and success of an organism depends on the complexity of environmental conditions. Organisms have a minimum and maximum tolerance range to each environmental factor, such as temperature, light, water, and nutrients. If environmental conditions are outside the tolerance range of the organism, then the organism will experience stress, stunted growth, or even death. Some key points in Shelford's Law of Tolerance: • Tolerance Limit: Each organism has an upper tolerance limit and a lower tolerance limit for each environmental factor. Between the two boundaries is the optimal range in which organisms can grow and reproduce properly. • Limiting Factors: Environmental factors that are outside the tolerance range of an organism can be limiting factors that inhibit the growth, reproduction, or survival of an organism. • Steno and Euri species: Some organisms have a narrow tolerance range (steno) to an environmental factor, while others have a wide tolerance range (euri). For example, salmon is stenohalin, meaning they have a narrow tolerance to changes in salinity. • Interaction of Environmental Factors: Environmental factors do not work in isolation, but rather interact with each other. For example, high temperatures can increase an organism's need for water. • Critical Period: The reproductive period is a critical period for organisms, where they have a narrower tolerance to environmental changes. Application of Shelford's Law of Tolerance Shelford's Law of Tolerance has many applications in ecology and conservation. For example: • Understanding Species Distribution: This law helps explain why certain species are only found in certain habitats. For example, spruce trees only grow in areas with cold temperatures because they have a narrow tolerance to high temperatures. • Predicting the Impact of Environmental Change: This law can be used to predict how environmental changes, such as climate change, will affect the distribution and abundance of species. • Designing Conservation Strategies: By understanding the tolerance range of species, we can design effective conservation strategies, such as protecting critical habitats or reducing pollution. Case Study: Coral Reef Coral reefs are examples of ecosystems that are very sensitive to environmental changes. Corals can only grow in waters with certain temperatures, salinity and water quality. Rising seawater temperatures due to global warming have led to widespread coral bleaching, in which corals lose their symbiotic algae and die.
