Selection, Gene Flow and Geographic Isolation Spatial patterns of heritable phenotypic diversity reflect the relative roles of gene flow and s election in determining geographic variation within a s pecies . The Red-Eyed Treefrog (Agalychnis callidryas) in lower Central America exhibits substantial genetic and phenotypic regional diversification. Phylogenetic analyses revealed five well-supported mitochondrial DNA clades (see below), a pattern corroborated using microsatellite genotyping that revealed highly structured populations. There was some on admixture of mtDNA haplotypes from phenotypically differentiated regions. Combined, these data revealed three generalized spatial patterns of genetic and phenotypic diversity for lower Central American popula tions: 1) phenotypic differentiation in the presence of historical connectivity, 2) phenotypic uniformity across genetically differentiated regions, and 3) co-distribution of genetic and phenotypic characters. These patterns indicate that phenotypic divers ification is highly regionalized and can result from spatial variation in localized adaptations, geographic isolation, genetic drift, and/or evolutionary stasis.
