What happens to the density of air as one moves up the atmosphere? The density of air decreases as one moves up the atmosphere due to decreasing pressure and temperature 4. Therefore, cold air is more / less dense and will sink / rise. b. Air in which the temperature has increased (warm air) will have high / low pressure. Therefore, warm air is more / less dense and will sink / rise. 5. What is a temperature inversion? A temperature inversion occurs when there is an increase in temperature with altitude instead of the normal decrease. This phenomenon traps cooler air near the surface under a layer of warmer air. It is often caused by calm, clear nights when the ground cools rapidly What causes it? Temperature inversions are caused by the radiation cooling of the Earth's surface on clear nights, leading to a layer of cooler air near the ground being trapped beneath a layer of warmer air What effect does it have on our environment? Temperature inversions can lead to the trapping of pollutants and particulate matter close to the ground, resulting in poor air quality. They can also disrupt normal atmospheric mixing patterns and affect local weather conditions 6. How is wind formed? Wind is formed due to differences in air pressure caused by variations in temperature and the Earth's rotation. Air moves from areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure, creating wind 7. What is dew point? Dew point is the temperature at which air becomes saturated with water vapor, leading to condensation and the formation of dew or fog What does it indicate about the comfort of a particular place? The dew point is often used as an indicator of human comfort. Higher dew points indicate higher levels of moisture in the air, which can make it feel more humid and uncomfortable, while lower dew points indicate drier air 8. What is relative humidity? Relative humidity is the ratio of the amount of water vapor present in the air compared to the maximum amount of water vapor the air can hold at a specific temperature and pressure. It is expressed as a percentage 9. How can relative humidity be determined? (Be able to calculate this.) Relative humidity can be determined using a hygrometer or by comparing the actual vapor pressure of the air to the saturation vapor pressure at a given temperature. The formula to calculate relative humidity is: Relative Humidity = (Actual Vapor Pressure / Saturation Vapor Pressure) x 100%
