Nomenclature of Ternary Compounds Simple ternary compounds include acids, bases, and salts. Acids, bases and salts are three groups of compounds that are related to one another. Acid and base reactions produce salts. 1. Nomenclature of Acids The acid formula consists of a hydrogen atom (at the front, it can be thought of as an H+ ion ) and an anion called an acid residue. However, keep in mind that acids are covalent compounds, not ionic compounds. The name of the remaining anion of the acid is the same as the acid in question without the word acid. Example: H3PO4 ÿÿÿ 3 H+ + acid ion PO4 3– residual acid anion (phosphate) The name of the acid is phosphoric acid. The molecular formulas and names of some of the acids commonly found in the laboratory and in everyday life are: H2 SO4 : sulfuric acid (in battery) HNO3 : nitric acid : phosphoric H3PO4 : phosphoric acid CH3 COOH : acetic acid (vinegar) 2. Nomenclature of Bases Bases are substances that can produce OH- ions in water . Alkaline solutions are caustic, meaning that if they come into contact with the skin it feels slippery like soap. In general, bases are ionic compounds consisting of metal cations and OH– anions . The name of a base is the same as the name of the cation followed by the word hydroxide. Example: NaOH Na+ + OH– hydroxide natrium Ca(OH)2 Ca2+ + calcium Al(OH)3 : aluminum hydroxide Cu(OH)2 : copper(II) hydroxide Ba(OH)2 : barium hydroxide 2OH– hydroxide 3. Nomenclature of Salt Salts are ionic compounds consisting of a basic cation and a residual anion sour. Formulas and naming of salt compounds are the same as compounds ion.
