Electrolyte Solution Ionization Reaction Based on the previous information, we all know that electrolyte solutions can conduct electric current because they can undergo ionization reactions to become electrically charged ions, whereas nonelectrolyte solutions do not undergo ionization reactions to become electrically charged ions. The question that arises now is how to write the ionization reaction of the electrolyte solution? Please follow the following ionization reaction writing guidelines. We can easily write the ionization reaction of an electrolyte solution just by following the guidelines for writing the ionization reaction of an electrolyte solution. You must understand these guidelines if you want to be able to write down the ionization reaction. Guidelines for writing ionization reactions as follows. 1. Strong Electrolyte a. Strong acid Hx Z (aq) Example: x H+ (aq) + Zx– (aq) • HCl(aq) H+ (aq) + Cl– (aq) • H2 SO4 (aq) 2 H+ (aq) + SO4 2–(aq) • HNO3 (aq) H+ (aq) + NO3 – (aq) b. Strong base M(OH)x (aq) Mx+ (aq) + x OH– (aq) Example: • NaOH(aq) Na+ (aq) + OH– (aq) • Ba(OH)2 (aq) Ba2+(aq) + 2 OH– (aq) • Ca(OH)2 (aq) Ca2+(aq) + 2 OH– (aq) c. Salt Mx Zy (aq) x My+ (aq) + y Zx– (aq) Example: • NaCl(aq) Na+ (aq) + Cl– (aq) • Na2 SO4 • Al2 (SO4 )3 (aq) 2. Weak electrolytes a. Weak acid Hx Z(aq) 2 Na+ (aq) + SO4 2–(aq) 2 Al3+(aq) + 3SO4 2–(aq) x H+ (aq) + Zx– (aq) Example: CH3 COOH(aq) H+(aq) + CH3 COO– (aq) H2 SO3 (aq) 2 H+ (aq) + SO3 2–(aq) H3 PO4 (aq) 3 H+ (aq) + PO4 – (aq) b.
