LECTURE NOTES BANDWIDTH Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data that can be transmitted over a network connection in a given amount of time. It refers to the rate at which data can be transmitted over a network and is typically measured in bits per second (bps) or a multiple of bps, such as kilobits per second (Kbps), megabits per second (Mbps), or gigabits per second (Gbps). In general, higher bandwidth allows for faster data transfer rates and improved performance for applications and services that rely on network connectivity. How Bandwidth works : 1. Bandwidth is the amount of data that can be transmitted over a network connection in a given amount of time. 2. It is typically measured in bits per second (bps), such as Kbps, Mbps, or Gbps. 3. Available bandwidth determines the speed at which data can be transmitted over a network connection. 4. Factors such as network congestion, latency, and distance can affect the availabl bandwidth and cause fluctuations in data transfer rates. 5. Network congestion occurs when there is a high volume of traffic on a network, which can reduce the available bandwidth. 6. Higher latency can cause delays in data transmission and reduce the effective bandwidth. 7. The distance between the sender and the receiver can also affect the available bandwidth. 8. Sufficient bandwidth is important to support bandwidth-intensive applications and services. Bandwidth has several functions, namely:  Measure the data transmission capacity The main function of the bandwidth is to measure the data transmission capacity of the communication channel. It determines the amount of data that can be transmitted over a network connection in a certain period of time.  Determines network speed Bandwidth plays an important role in determining network speed. This affects how quickly data can be transferred between devices and how quickly web pages, videos and other content can load.  Affects the quality of data transfer Bandwidth also affects the quality of data transfer. With higher bandwidth, data is less likely to be lost or delayed, resulting in a more reliable and consistent network connection.  Support data-intensive applications Bandwidth is critical for data-intensive applications, such as video and audio streaming, online gaming, and cloud computing, which require large amounts of data to be delivered quickly and efficiently.  Improve network performance By ensuring high-speed and reliable data transmission, bandwidth improves network performance, reduces latency and improves the overall user experience. Users should always save on bandwidth usage because :  Bandwidth is limited and can be quickly exhausted if users consume too much of it.  ISPs impose data caps or usage limits to prevent network congestion and ensure fair use of network resources.  Exceeding data caps or usage limits can result in additional charges or speed throttling.  Saving bandwidth usage helps prevent these issues and ensures fair access to network resources.  Users can save bandwidth by reducing unnecessary data consumption and limiting streaming quality.
