Through the literary works of luminaries like Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, and Claude McKay, the Harlem Renaissance not only celebrated the richness of African American culture but also provided a platform for articulating the experiences and aspirations of Black Americans during a transformative period in American history. Langston Hughes, often regarded as the "Poet Laureate of Harlem," captured the essence of the Harlem Renaissance through his poetry, essays, and plays. His works brimmed with the rhythms and cadences of jazz and blues, reflecting the vibrancy and dynamism of Black urban life. Hughes explored themes of identity, heritage, and the quest for social justice, inviting readers to confront the complexities of racial identity and cultural belonging. His poem "The Negro Speaks of Rivers" resonates with profound historical consciousness, linking the experiences of Black Americans to the ancient currents of civilization.
