The Civil Rights Movement was a pivotal time in history, where racial tension was at its highest, and public school segregation was protested. However, during this time, people stood united and ready to fight racial injustice. Instead of faltering at this time, children and students rose above these hurdles, to fight for their education, by improving their test scores, continuing to stay in school, and joining hands with their community. Briefly explain why you believe each of these events contributed to the passage of the Act. Three specific historical events that can be considered contributory causes of the passage of the Voting Rights Act are Bloody Sunday, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's arrest, and passage of the 24th ammendment. Bloody Sunday was a march of around six hundred African Americans, from Selma to Montogomery, to protest unfair voting treatment. The arrest of Martin Luther King Jr., helped gain support for the civil rights movement. While passage of the 24th amendment helped eliminate issues citizens had with voting: poll tax fees that were paid annually by citizens. One event that was part of the course of this bill's passage by Congress was the 15th amendment: prohibited citizens to be denied the right to vote based on race or color. What kind of sources and evidence do you think the author will use to support his thesis? The topic of this essay is the first sit in in Charleston, where African American teacher and students took a stand to defend their civil rights, which the author makes clear in the introduction. The author's thesis is that, "By examining the effort to desegregate public facilities through thelens of the first sit-in in Charleston, this article will illustrate how a small, committed groupof local high school students and teachers played an integral, though overlooked, role in thecivil rights movement." I think the author will use sources such as newspaper articles, journals, and photographs to support his thesis.
