Plessy v. Ferguson 1896 - Deates "Seperate but equal doctorine Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka 1954 Third grader Linda Brown had to take a bus to a Segregated school. Her parents wanted her to attend the School much closer to her house. The segregated elementary schools in Topeka were of decent quality. The case was not arguing that the segregated schools were physically unequal, The NAACP had to fight the very "principle" or idea of segregation. Social Scientist in Brown v. Board of Education Political Science played a huge role in Brown v. Board inferiority was created in the minds of black childsen for having to go - to segregated school Conclusion Segregated public schools violated the 14th Amendment's equal protection clause "In the field of public education, seperate but equal has no place." This did not overrule all segregation, Just school segregation. But created precedent for future segregation cases. Civil Rights Act of 1964 Banned discrimination in public accomodations remployment, or voting, on the basis of color, national origin, race, seligion, or sex. Voting Rights Act of 1964 legislation prohibiting racial discrimination in voting, including the use of literacy test, poll taxes, and grandfather clauses Title IX (9) A provison of the Education Amendments of 1972, which prevents Schools and universities seceving Federal funding from discriminating against female students Affirmative Action: efforts to improve opportunites for underrepresented or disadvantaged groups, espically in relation to employment or education The Supreme Court on Affirmative Action Some Justices argue that affirmative action is constitutional, holding that the Constitution only forbids racial classifications designed to harm minorities others disagree, arguing that affirmative action creates race-based and gender-based classifications, benefiting certingenders and race groups over others. Opportunity v. Outcome: the idea between maintaining equality of starting points vs having equality in the ending point
