ACTIVE LEARNING TEMPLATE: Medication Geodon MEDICATION __________________________________________________________________________ REVIEW MODULE CHAPTER ___________ antipsychotic CATEGORY CLASS ______________________________________________________________________ PURPOSE OF MEDICATION Expected Pharmacological Action GEODON is indicated for the treatment of schizophrenia, as monotherapy for the acute treatment of bipolar manic or mixed episodes, and as an adjunct to lithium or valproate for the maintenance treatment of bipolar disorder Therapeutic Use Maintenance treatment of bipolar I disorder as an adjunct to lithium or valproate Complications Cerebrovascular Adverse Reactions in Elderly Patients with Dementia-Related Psychosis, Increased incidence of cerebrovascular adverse reactions such as stroke, transient ischemi attack Medication Administration IM, PO Schizophrenia: Initiate at 20 mg twice daily. Daily dosage may be adjusted up to 80 mg twice dailyTake GEODON only as directed by your doctor. Swallow the capsules whole. Take GEODON capsules with food. It is best to take GEODON at the same time each day. GEODON may take a few weeks to work. It is important to be patient. Do not change your dose or stop taking your medicine without your doctor’s approval. Remember to keep taking your capsules, even when you feel better. Contraindications/Precautions history of kidney disease, liver dysfunction, QT prolongation, recent acute myocardial infarction, uncompensated heart failure, do not use in combination with other drugs that have demonstrated QT prolongation, should be avoided in patients with bradycardia, hypokalemia or hypomagnesemia, Interactions Ziprasidone should not be used in combination with other drugs that have demonstrated QT prolongation, the absorption of ziprasidone is increased up to two-fold in the presence of food. Nursing Interventions monitor for postural hypotension, electrolyte imbalance, agranulocytosis, place patient on fall risk, monitor for fever or other signs and symptoms of infection, neuro check q2 hrs, Client Education Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness patient will demonstate a decrease in symptoms of schizophrenia and manic or mixed episodes of bipolar disorder. report any feelings of suicidal ideations, get up slowly and ask for assistance getting up, report any shortness of breath or feeling of having a fever, Because GEOOON can cause sleepiness, be careful when operating machinery or drving a motor vehicle.
