Acid/Base o List the six strong acids. o Distinguish a strong acid from a weak acid or distinguish a strong base from a weak base. o Distinguish between a strong, weak, and non-electrolyte. Chemical Equations o Balance chemical reactions o Write net ionic chemical equations o Recognize chemical reaction types (i.e., combustion, single displacement, neutralization, double displacement) o List the two criteria for a chemical reaction to occur. o List the signs that a chemical reaction has occurred. Stoichiometry o Determine and calculate limiting reactant whether given sample mass or Molarities or Pressure/Volume. o Calculate the percent yield of a reaction when given the actual mass. o Calculate the actual mass produced when given percent yields. Solutions: o Distinguish between solute, solvent, and solution o Know how to make a solution from a solid and a solution via a dilution. Thermodynamics: o Define the terms Endothermic vs. Exothermic o Determine the sign on H for endothermic and exothermic o Distinguish between the terms System, Surroundings & Universe o Explain how temperature changes in the Surrounding indicate the flow of energy (heat) from the system. o Define enthalpy. o Explain why temperature is not heat. o Manipulate and solve problems using q = T x m x Specific Heat. o Convert between joules, calories, Calories, kilojoules, and kilocalories. o Solve H problems using either Hess’s Law Equation or by Indirect method. Gases o Manipulate and calculate problems using the Ideal Gas law and its various derivations o Define diffusion & effusion? o Recognize Grahams’ law of Diffusion and Maxwell’s Distribution of Molecular Velocities Mathematics equations; know when they will be used and use in calculations. o Ideal Gas Law vs. Van der Waals Gas Law formula ▪ What do the corrections represent in the Van der Waals formula ▪ What conditions does the Ideal Gas Law fail? o Calculate problems using the Dalton’s Law of Partial Pressure Relationships. ▪ Determine the mole fraction o Kinetic Theory of Gases: know the general postulates/assumption of the theory
