(MUST SEND ME AN EMAIL WITH CLEAR INDICATION OF TEAM NAME ):
1. HIGHLY PREFERRED: A problem design of your interest and of similar complexity than the following
below (upon approval from the instructor TODAY). Suggested areas of interest are: DESIGN (devices) for
handicap aid, renewable energy, sustainability, materials recycling, etc... NOTE THAT MECHANICAL
SOLUTIONS ARE NEEDED (and not “magical” electronic boxes, or computers that “do” the work…)
2. Portable container/system to dispose biologically contaminated gear (aprons, clothes, goggles, etc.): a
portable/hauled device/system that can be used to safely dispose/transport biologically contaminated gear, it must
have safe openings/gates/lock-door, etc.
3. Leaf-collection system: design a man-powered or appliance-powered system to collect and dispose leaves from an
average-size yard. The system must be different, less expensive and have clear advantages over available
commercial products.
4. Fixture to turn ordinary bicycle into stationary exercise one: It must have clear advantages over (if any)
available commercial products. NOTE: It must be a MECHANICAL DESIGN, it is NOT about adding electronics
gizmos to an existing one ….
5. A mosquito/gnat trap for outdoor use: Must have clear advantages over available commercial products.
6. Trash-sorting portable device: a portable/hauled device/system that can sort glass, paper, plastic, and metal into
separate sets, and that can be used to sort trash outdoors (for instance, after crowd events as festival, shows, etc.) It
must have clear advantages over (if any) available products. NOTE: must be a MECHANICAL DESIGN.
7. Amphibious bicycle: design a bicycle that can be also a self-propelled floating device. It must be portable in or on
a standard car. NOTE: Must have clear advantages over available commercial products.
8. Narrow-aisle forklift for warehouses: A movable “vehicle” that fits in a narrow aisle (~3ft-wide), and lift boxes
(of weight~10lb minimum) to a height of up to 6ft. It must have clear advantages over any commercial product.
9. Drain/Gutter Cleaner device: a device to clean leaves and other debris/trash from house gutter/drains; it have
clear advantages over (any) available commercial products.
ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS: (ii) “Market” research: an Internet-based research on similar products (if
any existent) will be enough. (iii) Specs definition: the QFD must include ALL ELEMENTS. Remember that
the new design (based on the set targets) must have clear advantages over (if any) available commercial
products.
(iv) Concept(s) generation: brief report with graphics (MANY sketches) and methods used to
generate concept.
(v) Concept(s) evaluation: Use methods to choose the “best” concept (with sketches, if
needed) and/or how it answers (yes or no, pros and cons) to each of the QFD requirements.
(vi)
Presentation to the class: A PowerPoint-based presentation of the full mini-project to the class. All team
members must present, other teams may be graded for their participation too. It must include all the
elements (ii) to (v) above.
