Good to improve ideas… Patents search is important because:
- good ideas may come from patents; and
– we don’t want to use a patented idea without
knowing it…and pay that later…
A patent is a legal right granted to a person or
organization to “own” the idea; anybody using it for
profit must negotiate a “royalty” paid to the grantee.
Patents are usually awarded for 30 years (but they
may be extended…)
There are two types of patents: - “design” ones (the
look, they are weak, not of interest to our class), and
– UTILITY PATENTS: the idea, they are strong.
Patents are granted by the US Patents and Trademark
Office (USPTO), and other foreign country offices Patents
