They help students understand accounting concepts through interactive tools in Connect. Chapter 1 Activities: Tableau DA 1-2 Exercise: Focuses on applying the accounting equation, similar to QS 1-7. o Tableau DA 1-3 Mini-Case: Focuses on applying the accounting equation and identifying balance sheet accounts, similar to QS 1-8 and Exercise 1-9. o Tableau DA Exercise on Income Statement: Focuses on preparing an income statement, similar to QS 1-15 and Exercise 1-18. 2. Accounting Analysis (AA) Assignments: These assignments are designed to refine students' analysis and critical-thinking skills. They involve analyzing real financial data and are auto-gradable in Connect. They can be assigned chapter by chapter or grouped for a comprehensive financial statement analysis project. o Example of AA Assignment: o AA 1-1: Uses key financial figures from Apple’s two most recent fiscal years. How much are total expenses for Apple in the current year?  Students analyze the income statement to find the total expenses. 4. Is Apple’s current year return on assets better or worse than the competitors' average return of 10%?  Students compare Apple’s ROA to the 10% benchmark. Example of How to Approach AA 1-1: 1. Total Assets Invested in Apple: o Look up the balance sheet for Apple’s current fiscal year. The total assets are typically listed toward the bottom of the balance sheet under the "Assets" section. 2. Apple's Return on Assets (ROA): o Use the formula ROA = Net Income / Total Assets. o Obtain the net income from Apple’s income statement and total assets from the balance sheet. o Calculate ROA and express it as a percentage. 3. Total Expenses for Apple: o Locate total expenses in the income statement. Total expenses include operating costs, cost of goods sold (COGS), and other expenses like taxes and interest. 4. Comparison of ROA with Competitors: o After calculating Apple's ROA, compare it to the 10% average return on assets for competitors. If Apple’s ROA is higher than 10%, it performed better; if lower, it performed worse.
