(Related to Essential Skill 3-3) Cell Specialization • In single celled organisms, one cell performs all of the functions needed for life • In multicellular organisms, different types of cells perform different functions – These cells are specialized: they have different shapes & structures so they can perform specific jobs Specialized Cells – Muscle Cells Specialized Cells – White Blood Cell Specialized Cells – Nerve Cell Specialized Cell – Bone Cell Specialized Cell – Plant Leaf Cell Specialized Cell - Amoeba From Tissues to Organ Systems Tissues • Tissues are made of groups of cells that carry out a specific function • Examples: – Epithelial tissue covers the surfaces of the body – Connective tissue supports & links together other tissues – Muscle tissue contracts – Nervous tissue transmits messages throughout the body Organs • Organs are made up of several different types of tissues interacting to perform a specific function • Examples: – The stomach which is made up of: • • • • Muscle tissue Epithelial tissue Connective tissue Nervous tissue • All but the simplest organisms have organs Organ Systems • Organ systems are made up of a group of organs working together to perform a set of related functions • Example: – The digestive system is made up of: • • • • Mouth Esophagus Stomach Intestines – Nervous system – Circulatory system – Respiratory System Tissues & Organs in Plants • Plants also have tissues & organs, but they are organized differently from animal tissues & organs • Plant Tissue Systems: – Dermal tissue system forms the outer layer – Ground tissue system makes up roots & stems – Vascular tissue system transports water • Plant Organs: – Roots, stems, leaves & flowers The Evolution of Multicellular Organization • Unicellular organisms may have lived together in groups (colonies) • Some cells in the colonies may have developed the ability to perform special functions (such as photosynthesis) – These developed into colonial organisms (collections of genetically identical cells living in a tight group) • These colonies may have produced “offspring” colonies
