Materials available Beakers, balances, graduated cylinders, mystery liquids DEVELOP YOUR OWN PROCEDURE! Be sure to use a 100.0 ml sample of each liquid. -‐In your lab groups / tables, discuss how you could determine the density of the liquids, with the available materials. Keep in mind the goal of plotting the data on a graph. This consideration must factor into your devised procedure and data collection. -‐Be sure to make a data chart to record your measurements. Pay attention to units of measure, uncertainty, and significant figures. -‐After carrying out your procedure steps, recording observations and data, you will draw a graph of your data points. You will draw both lines on the same piece of graph paper. EACH STUDENT WILL BE HANDING IN only these specific parts of the Formal Lab Report: (3) PROCEDURE (2) OBSERVATIONS (2) DATA TABLE (5) GRAPH Clearly label all aspects of your graph. (4) CALCULATIONS 1. Determine the density of each liquid and show this calculation on a separate piece of paper, or directly on the graph if there is room. (5) QUESTIONS 1. Interpolate a mass value for 35.0 ml. Decide on the clearest way to report this answer. 2. Is it possible to extrapolate a mass value for 510 ml? Explain when extrapolating is possible and when it is not, in Science. (4) SOURCES OF ERROR 1. List two things, inherent in the procedural steps of this experiment, that could have affected your final results. Explain EXACTLY how each of these two procedural inefficiencies lead to errant data. For this lab, you are not required to complete the other two parts of the Discussion section: (comparing to accepted values, and discussion of relevant theory) 25 marks
