The Early Civil Rights Movement: (1955-1965) 1. The early fight was against Jim Crow -- and it was mostly a southern fight. 2. Who were these four black women? Claudette Colvin; Aurelia Browder; Mary Smith; & Susan McDonald 3. They all refused to give up their seat on a bus in 1955 before Rosa Parks. 4. What’s my first point? Lots of people get overlooked when history is told. (unavoidable) 5. What’s my next point? Without black women, there wouldn’t have been a successful C. R. Movement. 6. Black women were leaders in virtually every civil rights organization (except for the Nation of Islam); but not one woman spoke at the famous March on Washington, 1963. Anna Hedgeman, a black woman, was on the planning committee but was told that no women were scheduled to speak. 7. Black women often faced two problems: racism and patriarchy. 8. The early movement was marked by Dr. King’s philosophy of non-violence (SCLC). This meant that protestors faced violence or death but couldn’t fight back. Protestors needed people’s sympathy, not anger. 9. It took 10 years, but Jim Crow eventually fell in 1965.
