Assignment 7: Attraction and love online INSTRUCTIONS The Purpose of this Assignment: One of the primary objectives for this week is to understand the different factors that influence whether or not we become attracted to others, as well as the different ways in which love may exist. Thus far, we’ve discussed these concepts in the context of in-person situations and relationships. However, the rise of dating apps has considerably changed the way in which individuals form relationships. Therefore, in this assignment, you will be applying the concepts you covered in the lecture and readings to the world of online dating. Instructions: Completing this assignment will involve reading a hypothetical scenario involving a new dating app and answering four questions at the end of this document. Your responses should reflect what decisions you will make in response to each of the four questions, and be supported by the content we’ve covered in the lectures and readings. Your final product should be a Word or PDF file with the answers to all four questions. You should begin by creating a new document. At the top include your name, your recitation section, and Assignment #7. Include the question number and your response for each of the four questions. Your written responses should be double spaced and in Times New Roman 12 point font. Be sure to answer all of the questions. Submit the completed document as a Word (.doc or .docx) or PDF (.pdf) file to the Turnitin link in the Lecture Blackboard page . The final product should be no more than 2 pages long (shorter is perfectly fine). Submission policy: This assignment must be submitted using the Turnitin submission link in your recitation folder on Blackboard. Assignments will not be accepted via email under any circumstances. Late assignments, even if by 1 second late, will not be accepted. Technology-related problems will not be an acceptable excuse for failing to submit this assignment by the deadline. Be sure you give yourself plenty of time to resolve any computer issues or questions ahead of the deadline. ITS Please note: Pop-up blockers might prevent a proper upload of your assignment, so ensure you turn them off. Also, Turnitin does not work well with the Safari browser. SU recommends using Chome or Mozilla Firefox as your internet browser. You must submit your work as a Word or PDF document. No other file types will be accepted. No assignments will be accepted after the deadline, even if you have a screenshot of your submission attempt before the deadline or even if you provide the “last modified” date in a Word document. Bottom line, the only way you will earn credit for this assignment is if you submit it before the deadline via Turnitin. You will know you have successfully submitted the assignment when you receive an email confirmation from Turnitin. If you do not receive a confirmation, you did not properly submit your assignment and will need to resubmit it. If you resubmit an assignment, it will save right over the old submission and all we will grade is your final submission. Assignment Guidelines: • You must read the hypothetical scenario below answer all questions in their entirety (make sure you answer each part!) • Write your responses using double-spaced 12 point Times New Roman font formatting • You must submit a Word or PDF document • The final product should be no more than 2 pages long (shorter is fine!) • You must draw specific links between your personal experiences and attachment theory/the reading/lectures for this week Hypothetical scenario: Imagine that you are a prominent psychology researcher at Syracuse University, specializing in the areas of attraction and love. You receive an email from a startup company that wants to develop a new mobile dating application, and would like your insight and advice on ensuring that their app follows psychological principles pertaining to attraction, love, and sexual orientation. Specifically, they’re interested in maximizing the processes that will lead to greater attraction and “successful” love matches for their users. After reading the hypothetical situation, think about the material you covered in class on attraction and love, as well as sexual orientation and please provide a brief answer for each of the following four question sets. Be sure to answer ALL parts of the question! 1. Explain how you will apply the three influences on attraction that we covered in lecture (proximity, similarity, reciprocity) to the dating app. What suggestions will you give the startup company regarding the design of their dating app, so that it takes these principles into consideration? 2. The app developers are also interested in tracking the relationships of any successful matches on their app. That is, they would like to know what type of relationship couples who have found each other through the app now have. Based on what you know about Sternberg’s Triangular theory of love, what suggestions will you give to the startup regarding the type of information they should gather to determine the type of relationship successful matches have. Be specific here – what behaviors would you ask about? What would those behaviors mean in terms of the three components of passion, liking, and commitment? And what combinations of those components would you ideally want to see in the successful matches? 3. The app developers also want to ensure that their dating app is inclusive of individuals of all sexual orientations. Again, they ask you what information they should collect from users to ensure that they’re presented with potential matches that match their sexual orientation. Based on the content covered regarding sexual orientation, what would you tell the app developers? Should they adopt a categorical option of users selecting their sexual orientation (i.e., option 1: homosexual, option 2: heterosexual, etc.,) or a different method, and why? Wwhat would this method look like? 4. Finally, the app developers want to track friendships that may form from individuals meeting on the dating app. Similar to the questions you answered in question 2, you’re asked to give the startup suggestions on what type of information they should gather to determine whether a friendship has formed. What behaviors would you ask about? What would those behaviors mean in terms of the three components of passion, liking, and commitment? And what combinations of those components would you ideally want to see in friendships? You do not need to write one single essay to complete this assignment. Instead, for each of the four question sets above, write the number of the question (DO NOT COPY THE QUESTION INTO YOUR ASSIGNMENT) and then provide a brief, written answer. The entire assignment should not exceed 2 double-spaced pages (12pt Times New Roman font). This assignment is based on your opinions and decisions regarding a new dating app. You don’t need to support your arguments with research evidence. It is okay to write this assignment in first person. I would like to hear your voice in this reflection. However, I do want you to fully explain your thinking. Draw specific connections between your answers to the question sets and the readings assigned for class. Please save your completed assignment as a Word or PDF document before submitting it online via Blackboard.
